Example Projects

We have worked on a number of interesting projects in the past including:

Investigating claims reserving for motor insurance liability claims

We investigated the case estimates established for an insurer's motor liability claims and found interesting consistent patterns emerge in claims reserving which allowed the sponsor to establish IBNR / IBNER reserves.

Advising EMAG

We have advised EMAG on the actuarial aspects of the collapse of Equitable Life including levels of bonus declared in the 1990s and whether the then regulators should have identified areas of possible concern in Equitable from published information.  The information used was all public domain published returns and accounts combined with published reports from Lord Penrose.

Run off plan for with profit insurance fund in proprietary company

We developed the run off plan for 2 with profit funds in a proprietary company with investment matrices, decision points on removing the ring fence fund and advice on the management of the bonus rate.

New life insurers in UK and other domains

We have provided actuarial advice around gaining permissions for new insurers in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and the Channel Islands.  Business planning and pricing plus establishing capital plans and reinsurance programmes.

Transfer of engagements.

We have been involved in a number of transfers of engagements both advising those wishing to take on an existing block of business and those wishing to transfer the business out.  We have also acted as independent actuary outside the UK.  The work has involved due diligence investigations and model offices giving views as to the likely impact on policyholders from the transaction.

Expert witness on pension review.

We provided factual witness statements and witness statements on matters of opinion in a case involving an IFA and a financial services group on the conduct of the pensions review.  In particular, we gave opinions on whether Phase 2 was always seen as part of the review.

Expert witness on life insurance practice

We have provided expert witness opinions on the conduct of commissions clawbacks in the past and whether the practice was normal and the level of lapses that could be expected on differing blocks of business by time.

New products.

We provided advice on a number of new products.  Child Trust Fund is one where we have had to provide advice not only on product structure but on unit pricing systems and how to structure the database to allow for unit holdings for various clients.  Here, our systems and unit linked experience have helped clients gain permissions to launch unit linked policies as well as CTF.

Business planning

A client did not have a model office provided by their own actuarial adviser but had a business plan developed internally.  We corrected errors in actuarial understanding, built models of subsidiary service companies, added new products and incorporated estimates of pillar 2 solvency (ICA) as well as the pillar 1 solvency.

Actuarial system tender.

A client's actuarial department wished to purchase a new actuarial system.  We scoped the full market, helped write the tender document, helped the client score the responses, sat in and helped the client run the final shortlist presentations and make the final choice.  We ran all the contacts with the providers and documented the process.
